Largest operational green hydrogen plant in North America will soon integrate solar
H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies, an international green hydrogen producer, started operations of SoHyCal, the largest green hydrogen production plant powered entirely by renewable energy in North America to date.
This green hydrogen facility will eventually be powered by solar PV, and with proton exchange membrane electrolysis (PEM) technology supplied by Ingeteam, at full capacity the plant will be capable of producing up to three tons of green hydrogen per day.
The electrolyser will receive direct current from a power station with two rectifiers developed and manufactured by Ingeteam.
“In the quest for a greener energy transition, SoHyCal represents a cornerstone in California’s commitment to developing and promoting clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel technologies. The project is poised to significantly contribute to the surging demand for hydrogen, particularly for transportation applications, the reduction of emissions and the decarbonization in mobility,” said Pedro Pajares, CEO of H2B2 USA.
SoHyCal production and scale
SoHyCal is its first operational phase, producing up to one ton of green hydrogen per day powered by biogas. In the second phase of the project, which is expected to be developed in the coming months, H2B2 will incorporate a photovoltaic power plant on the adjacent land. It will transition to solar energy in phase two by Q2 2025. The plant’s annual hydrogen output will fuel up to 210,000 cars per year or 30,000 city buses.
SoHyCal was financed in part by a a $3.96 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) Clean Transportation Program. The plant serves Hydrogen Refueling Stations in the San Joaquin Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area.
“This project is very important for Ingeteam, as it is our first project in North America and confirms our firm global commitment to green hydrogen,” said Harkaitz Ibaiondo, director of Ingeteam’s green hydrogen business unit.
