The largest US solar + storage project is complete

Dated January 18, 2024. Terra-Gen and Mortenson have nearly finished the Edwards & Sanborn Solar + Energy Storage project, which is the most sizable combined solar and storage project in the U.S. Mortenson served as the comprehensive contractor responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) aspects of both the solar and energy storage elements. The endeavor covers an expanse of over 4,600 acres and is equipped with in excess of 1.9 million solar panels manufactured by First Solar. The project produces a total of 875 megawatts of direct current (MWDC) from solar power and includes energy storage facilities capable of holding 3,287 megawatt-hours (MWh). It has a maximum interconnection limit of 1,300 megawatts. The project is credited to Mortenson. The initiative provides electricity to several entities including the city of San Jose, Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the Clean Power Alliance, Starbucks, and other organizations. Part of the project is located at Edwards Air Force Base and represents the most significant partnership between the public and private sectors ever recorded in the history of the U.S. Department of Defense. The facility, now completely functional, harnesses batteries from LG Chem, Samsung, and BYD and represents an industry-altering project, according to Brian Gorda, the Vice President of Engineering at Terra-Gen, that contributes to the stability of the power grid. The Mortenson group was charged with the formidable challenge of constructing this project, and they demonstrated that they were the appropriate choice for the task.
